Herpes Stigma Lunch n’ Learn
Join us for an easily digestible series of workshops that can be consumed alongside your lunch break (see what I did there?). June 16th-June 18th we will have a workshop each day covering a unique aspect and application of SPFPP’s Stigma Minimization tactics to be applied to the medical field (physicians, nurses, public health), the mental health field (therapists, educators, and social workers) and then for the individuals navigating stigma directly. Each workshop will be held from 12pm-1:30pm Eastern Time. This will NOT be recorded, so live attendance is necessary to participate.
Jordan D’nelle PA-C: Tuesday June 16th
How do we deliver a herpes diagnosis to patients? We don’t always get it “right” but we can certainly work backwards from how providers can easily get it wrong. This workshop will teach you the importance of maintaining stigma-free language and supporting patients with herpes as part of STI minimization. How we deliver a diagnosis to a patient not only impacts how they go on to discuss their positive status but IF they do it! This workshop will cover the importance of being able to talk about sex with patients beyond the treatment angle, but to also the value of serving as an educator to minimize the harm of stigma.
Tatiana Parris LMSW: Wednesday June 17th
“I could never tell my therapist about this” - SPFPP Client. At SPFPP, we say sexual health is mental health. How a person perceives themselves sexually is interconnected with their identity. Receiving a herpes diagnosis traps a person into identifying with their own internal beliefs surrounding what it means to live with the herpes virus. The people who they should be able to get support from are unable to support them in fear of being perceived differently by friends, family, partners, and yes, even their therapist. In this workshop, we’ll learn how to receive a diagnosis disclosure from a patient and respond to their conscious needs and foresee what their needs could be when they don’t know what they need yet.

This one is for the Yogis and those who want a blueprint for neutralizing internalized stigma. I started practicing Yoga immediately after my herpes diagnosis in 2013 and have since gone into a deeper understanding by going through a 500 hour program for Yoga teaching, and I’m closing out my Yoga Therapy training this year. The Eight Limbs of Yoga are what I’ve been practicing for myself and expressing through SPFPP this entire time. It took me a year and some change, but I now have aligned language to pass the knowledge in a way that feels connected to my community and I’m ready to share.
