Something Positive for Positive People Herpes Stigma ExpO - Brooklyn, NY
To Register, select a donation option below and then we’ll send you the address via email prior to the event.
What to Expect
The SPFPP Herpes Stigma Expo is an integrated approach to herpes support. You can expect to be educated, entertained, and supported. The idea is to create an intentional space for people navigating herpes stigma to be able to come socialize and shake up that internal stigma to see alternative ways of moving it out of our system.
Tentative Schedule
-
We’ll be ready to receive guests. People can come in and socialize, converse, and find a seat to rest their things.
-
We will begin with a herpes support group facilitated by Courtney Brame where we’ll just talk through challenges and celebrate wins where requested. If you come into this, think about what you need for support, and what you have to contribute to the space and honor that for yourself.
-
Jolene will play the No Shame in This Game Documentary and we will have an open Q&A for feedback and any questions people have for her or any of the present actors.
-
Attendees will have the opportunity to grab lunch nearby and we’ll take a 75 minute break for people to go get food, or if anyone wants to participate in our simulations of talking about sexual health, stick around and watch or get silly and join in with us.
-
Dealbreaker is a 60-minute autobiographical solo show about dating with herpes. Growing up, Lauren always believed adulthood would be filled with fun dating experiences, flings, and eventually, true love. But on her quest to live out that dream, she gets… herpes. In this sex positive show, Lauren blends vulnerable storytelling with comedy to share what it's like dating with herpes, handling disclosure, and the path to healing. It's a story of stigma, self-discovery, and hope. This show is for anyone who's ever feared they might die alone because of herpes or anything else. Directed by Francesca Sobrer. Creative consultation by Lisa Burton.
-
We’ll have a workshop on dating and discussing sexual health and then practice various scenarios to construct our own swag to talking about sexual health.
-
We have to be out of the venue by 7pm so we’re going to plan to wrap up by 6:45pm and decide where to take the after party to.
Event Location
The location is accessible by the J train located in the vicinity of Myrtle Ave & Flushing Ave (I’m new here so if you need more specifics before you register, let me know lol). The address will be sent out to those who register for the event. There is a step at the front of the venue and the restrooms are accessible without having to use the stairs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out anytime. If you do not see your question, no question is too silly to ask. We can’t cover every possible scenario so I like to welcome any and all feedback to help us have as smooth of an event as possible..
-
The event is essentially a fundraiser. I’m accepting registrations via donation. For transparency, the event in total will be $2k between venue and paying the presenters. I believe that cost will be covered if everyone buys an early bird ticket.
-
If you only want to watch the one woman show, the documentary, or attend the workshop, you are more than welcome to come and go as you please. The final schedule will help you decide what event and time you want to attend.
-
I encourage people to take photos and videos of everything outside the herpes support group and at the request of the presenters, no videos are allowed when they are doing their thing. Outside that, we’ll have a protocol for consent to have people in or on video/pictures. But no one has to be in anything they don’t want to be, and I’ll do my best to make this a clear expectation.
-
I cannot guarantee that only people living with herpes will be in attendance, but I don’t see why someone who doesn’t have herpes would come to an event like this. We can’t assume that, cause it is NYC, so you just never know. I’d love to see people come learn and experience the event, but it is really unlikely that anyone who doesn’t have herpes will be here.

I have one volunteer helping me with the event the day of. I have a couple of roles for people to fill like some door people in rotation to take attendance, support people if they need things while I’m running around. Basically I need “another me” to be available to people regarding the schedule and questions people have.
